In Hindu religious scriptures, this context about Yamraj is very popular that Yamraj was forced to obey the stubbornness of a woman named Savitri and spared her husband’s life. But very few people would probably know about its second episode that Nachiketa, the son of Vajshravas (Uddalak) was forced to tell about the deep secrets related to death due to his obstinacy. Today we are going to tell you about this incident related to Yamraj and Nachiketa and the dialogue between them.
The description of this incident is found in the Hindu scripture Kathopanishad. According to this, Nachiketa was the son of Vajashravas (Uddalak) sage. Once he performed such a yagya called Vishvajeet, in which everything is donated. At the time of donation, Nachiketa was disturbed to see that his father was donating weak, sick cows instead of healthy cows. Nachiketa was religious and intelligent, he immediately understood that his father was doing this because of attachment.
To remove the father’s fascination, Nachiketa asked the father to whom he would donate his son. Uddalak Rishi avoided this question, but Nachiketa again asked the same question. On repeatedly asking this, the sage got angry and said that he will donate you to death (Yamraj). Nachiketa was saddened by his father’s sentence, but to protect the truth, Nachiketa also got his father to fulfill his vow of donating death. Then Nachiketa reached Yamlok in search of Yamraj.
On reaching Yama’s door, Nachiketa came to know that Yamraj was not there, yet he did not give up and sat there for three days without eating or drinking. When Yama came to know about Nachiketa from the gatekeeper on his return, he was very happy with the child’s patriotism and strong determination. Yamraj asked Nachiketa’s father to obey and take a strict vow for three days to ask for three boons.
Then Nachiketa asked for the affection of the first groom’s father. The second was about knowing fire science. The third boon was about the mystery of death and enlightenment. Yama tried his best to avoid the last boon and lured Nachiketa with many worldly comforts in exchange for enlightenment, but Nachiketa wanted to know the secret of death. Therefore, Nachiketa rejected all the comforts knowing them to be perishable. In the end, being forced, Yamraj told the secrets related to birth and death.

इस घटना का वर्णन हिन्दू ग्रंथ कठोपनिषद में मिलता है। इसके अनुसार नचिकेता वाजश्रवा (उद्दालक) ऋषि के पुत्र थे। एक बार उन्होंने विश्वजीत नामक ऐसा यज्ञ किया, जिसमें सब कुछ दान कर दिया जाता है। दान के समय, नचिकेता यह देखकर व्याकुल हो गया कि उसके पिता स्वस्थ गायों के बदले कमजोर, बीमार गायों का दान कर रहे हैं। नचिकेता धार्मिक और बुद्धिमान था, वह तुरंत समझ गया कि उसके पिता आसक्ति के कारण ऐसा कर रहे हैं।
पिता का मोह दूर करने के लिए नचिकेता ने पिता से पूछा कि वह अपने पुत्र का दान किसे देंगे। उद्दालक ऋषि इस प्रश्न को टाल गए, पर नचिकेता ने फिर वही प्रश्न किया। बार-बार ऐसा पूछने पर ऋषि को क्रोध आ गया और उन्होंने कहा कि वह तुम्हें मृत्यु (यमराज) को दान कर देंगे। नचिकेता अपने पिता की सजा से दुखी था, लेकिन सत्य की रक्षा के लिए नचिकेता ने भी अपने पिता से मृत्यु दान की प्रतिज्ञा पूरी करवा ली। तब नचिकेता यमराज की तलाश में यमलोक पहुंचे।
जब नचिकेता यम के द्वार पर पहुंचे और देखा कि यमराज वहां नहीं हैं, तो उन्होंने हार नहीं मानी और तीन दिन तक बिना कुछ खाए-पिए बैठे रहे। नचिकेता की वफादारी और संकल्प से यम प्रभावित हुए जब उन्होंने वापसी पर द्वारपाल से उनके बारे में सीखा। यमराज ने नचिकेता के पिता को तीन वरदान प्राप्त करने के लिए तीन दिनों तक आज्ञा मानने और उपवास करने का निर्देश दिया। तब नचिकेता ने वर के पिता की भक्ति का अनुरोध किया। दूसरी आवश्यकता अग्नि विज्ञान में ज्ञान की थी। तीसरा वरदान मृत्यु और ज्ञान की पहेली से संबंधित था।
यम ने आखिरी वरदान से बचने की पूरी कोशिश की और ज्ञान के बदले नचिकेता को कई सांसारिक सुख-सुविधाओं का लालच दिया, लेकिन नचिकेता मृत्यु का रहस्य जानना चाहता था। इसलिए नचिकेता ने सभी सुखों को नाशवान जानकर अस्वीकार कर दिया। अंत में मजबूर होकर यमराज ने जन्म और मृत्यु से जुड़े रहस्य बता दिए।

यमपुरी
वे यमराज को ढूंढ़ते हुए यमपुरी पहुंचे। नचिकेता की मृत्यु नहीं हुई थी, और यमपुरी शरीर के साथ प्रवेश करने में असमर्थ थे।
Hungry and Thirsty
So Yamraj told his gatekeeper to ask the boy to return. But Nachiketa did not listen to the gatekeeper and stood there, hungry and thirsty, outside the gate of Yampuri for 3 days.

तो यमराज ने अपने द्वारपाल से कहा कि वह लड़के को वापस बुला ले। लेकिन नचिकेता ने द्वारपाल की बात नहीं मानी और 3 दिन तक यमपुरी के द्वार के बाहर भूखे-प्यासे वहीं खड़ा रहा।

वरदान के रूप में नचिकेता ने सबसे पहले अपने पिता की भक्ति, फिर स्वर्ग अग्नि विज्ञान का ज्ञान और अंतिम मृत्यु की जानकारी मांगी।
Heaven Fire Science
Yamraj also gave his father’s affection as a boon and explained to Nachiketa the nature of the science of fire, by which heaven can be attained, the process of making Kundadi, and the method. Yamraj also said that from today this Vidya will be known by the name of Nachiketa i.e. Nachiketagni.
स्वर्ग अग्नि विज्ञान
यमराज ने नचिकेता को आशीर्वाद के रूप में अपने पिता की आराधना भी प्रदान की और उन्हें अग्नि के ज्ञान के रूप के बारे में बताया, जिससे स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति हो सकती है, साथ ही कुंडी बनाने की विधि और तरीका भी बताया। यमराज ने आगे कहा कि यह विद्या आज से नचिकेता अर्थात नचिकेताग्नि के नाम से जानी जाएगी।

तीसरी मांग
पहले तो यमराज ने बालक नचिकेता की तीसरी मांग पूरी करने में असमर्थता जताई लेकिन अंतत: उन्हें नचिकेता की जिद के आगे हार माननी पड़ी। इसके बाद मौत के रहस्य से पर्दा उठाने का सिलसिला शुरू हुआ।
“Om”
Yamraj told Nachiketa that “Om” is the form of God and Brahma himself resides inside the heart of man.

“ओम”
यमराज ने नचिकेता से कहा कि “ओम” भगवान का रूप है और स्वयं ब्रह्मा मनुष्य के हृदय के अंदर निवास करते हैं।
