Mahamantra of Kaliyug | Harinam | Hare Ram Hare Krishna Mantra
It is said in the Kali Santaran Upanishad of Yajurveda- At the end of Dwapar Yuga, when Devarshi nor Harinam is glorified… When asked the way to get rid of the influence of Kali in Kali Yuga, then the Creator said – by chanting the name of Adi Purush Lord Narayan, a man can destroy the defects of Kali Yuga.
On questioning that name mantra by Narad ji, Hiranyagarbha Brahma ji said –
हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे।
हरे राम हरे राम राम राम हरे हरे।।
Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare.
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare..
इति षोडषकं नाम्नाम् कलि कल्मष नाशनं |
नात: परतरोपाय: सर्व वेदेषु दृश्यते ||
Iti Shodakam Naamnam Kali Kalmash Nashanam.
Naat: Paratropaya: Sarva Vedashu Vishyate..
The chanting of the Mahamantra (Mahamantra of Kaliyug) containing 16 names is capable of destroying the contamination in Kaliyuga. Except this mantra, there is no other way of salvation in Kaliyuga anywhere in the four Vedas. In the Brihannardiya Purana it comes –
हरेर्नाम हरेर्नाम हरेर्नामैव केवलं|
कलौ नास्त्यैव नास्त्यैव नास्त्यैव गतिरन्यथा||
Harernam Harernam Harernamaiva Kevalam.
Kalau nastyyava nastyav nastyyava gatirannyatha..
In Kaliyuga, salvation can be achieved only by Harinama, Harinama and Harinama. Apart from Harinama, there is no other way of salvation in Kali Yuga, there is no, there is no.

In Kaliyuga, Krishna himself incarnates as Harinama. Salvation of the whole world is possible only by Harinama.
It is said in Padma Purana –
नाम: चिंतामणि कृष्णश्चैतन्य रस विग्रह:|
पूर्ण शुद्धो नित्यमुक्तोSभिन्नत्वं नाम नामिनो:||
Namaha Chintamani Krishnaschaitanya Rasa Vigraha.
Purna Shudho NityamuktoSbhanatvam Naam Naaminoh..
Harinama is like that Chintamani which can fulfill all the desires. Harinam is Krishna himself in the form of rasa and is the reservoir of chinmayattva (divinity). Harinaam is complete, pure, eternally free. There is no difference between Naami (Hari) and Harinama. The one who is Krishna – that is the name of Krishna; that is the name of Krishna – that is Krishna.
Srimad Bhagavatam (12.3.51) states that
- although Kaliyuga is a storehouse of defects, yet it has a great virtue.
- In the golden age by meditation (tapas) of the Lord, in the Tretayuga
- by performing sacrifices and rituals, in the Dwaparayuga,
- the same fruitful results are obtained by chanting the name-sankirtana of Sri Hari in Kaliyuga.
राम रामेति रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे।
सहस्रनाम तत्तुल्यं रामनाम वरानने ॥

Lord Shiva said – O Parvati!! I continuously chant the holy names of Rama, and take pleasure in this divine sound. This holy name of Ramachandra is equivalent to a 1000 holy names (Vishnusahastranama) of Lord Vishnu.
In the Ram Rakshastra Brahmanda Purana, it is said –
सहस्त्र नाम्नां पुण्यानां, त्रिरा-वृत्त्या तु यत-फलम् ।
एकावृत्त्या तु कृष्णस्य, नामैकम तत प्रयच्छति ॥
Sahastra Naamnaam Punyanaam, Trira-Vritya Tu Yat-Falam.
Ekavrtya tu krishnasya, namaikam tat pryachhati.
The outcome attained by chanting thousand holy names of Vishnu (Vishnusahastranama) can be attained by chanting the holy names of Krishna only once.
The greatness of Hare Krishna Mahamantra (Mahamantra of Kaliyug) is described in Bhaktichandrika as follows –
The thirty-two syllable name-mantra is the destroyer of all sins, is the form of fire to burn all kinds of ill-wishers, is the intellect of God with pure Sattva form, is worshiped and chanted by all. Worthy to do, the one who fulfills everyone’s wishes. Everyone has the right in the sankirtana of this Mahamantra. This mantra is the bondage of all beings, is full of all powers, and is the destroyer of disease and illness.
In the initiation of this Mahamantra (Mahamantra of Kaliyug), the idea of Muhurt is not required. There is no need for external worship in its chanting. It gives complete results by just uttering it. There is no restriction of time and country in the ritual of this mantra. It comes in the Anant Samhita of Atharvaveda –
षोडषैतानि नामानि द्वत्रिन्षद्वर्णकानि हि |
कलौयुगे महामंत्र: सम्मतो जीव तारिणे ||

The chanting of the mahamantra entailing of 16 names and 32 characters is the only mode to save the living beings in Kali yuga.
In the Chaitanyopanishad of the Atharvaveda, it appears –
स: ऐव मूलमन्त्रं जपति हरेर इति कृष्ण इति राम इति |
saha aiva moolmantram japati harer iti krishna iti rama iti.
Lord Gaurchandra always chants the Mahamantra in which the name ‘Hare’ comes first, then the name ‘Krishna’ and after that the name ‘Ram’. The description comes in the Padma Purana –
द्वत्रिन्षदक्षरं मन्त्रं नाम षोडषकान्वितं |
प्रजपन् वैष्णवो नित्यं राधाकृष्ण स्थलं लभेत् ||

Prajapan Vaishnavo Nityam Radhakrishna Sthalam Labhet..
Vaishnavas who regularly chant and chant the maha-mantra of thirty-two characters and sixteen names, they attain the divine abode of Sri Radha Krishna, Goloka. It is written in Vishnudharmottara that the rule of time and time does not apply in the name-sankirtana of Shri Hari. There is no prohibition to chant the name even in a dirty mouth or in any kind of impure state.
The Shrimad Bhagwat Mahapuranka even goes so far as to say that the errors or shortcomings of chanting, austerity and worship are corrected and corrected by chanting the name-sankirtana of Sri Hari. Hari-Naam should be chanted in a loud voice.
One who chants Hari-Name with a loud voice is better than one who chants Hari-Naam, because the chanter only purifies himself, while the chanter of Naam-Kirtan saves himself as well as the listener.
The statement of Harivamsa Purana is-
आदावन्तेचमध्येचहरि: सर्वत्र गीयते॥
Adavantecha madhechari: Sarvatra Geeyatay..
In the Vedas, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas, Sriharika has been sung everywhere in the beginning, middle and end. In Kaliyuga, mere chanting of Hari Name destroys all the defects.
So, keep chanting hainama or Mahamantra of Kaliyug.
