Why Snakes And Pitchers Buried In The Foundation Of A House?
It is written in the fifth skandha of Shrimad Bhagwat Mahapuran that under the earth there is Patal Lok and its master is Sheshnag. Atal ten thousand yojanas below the land, Vittal ten thousand yojanas below Atal, Satal ten thousand yojanas below that, in this order all the worlds are situated. Atal, Vital, Satal, Talatal, Mahatal, Rasatal, Patal, these seven worlds are called Patal heaven. Work, enjoyment, opulence, joy, prestige are present in these too. Demons, demons, snakes all live there enjoying pleasures. In all these hells, many puris remain illuminated. There are more gardens and parks in these than the beauty of Devlok.
Due to the absence of Sun etc. planets in these Patalas, there is no division of day and night. Because of this there is no fear of death. Here, the beads on the heads of big snakes dispel the darkness. Vasuki, the husband of Nag Lok, in Hades etc. snakes live. According to Shri Shukdev, Sheshji is sitting thirty thousand yojanas away from Patal. Earth is placed on Sheshji’s head. When he wishes to destroy the world in the rest of the holocaust, he appears with 11 Rudra tridents with three eyes in the middle of crooked eyebrows with anger. The world is said to be sitting on Sheshnag’s hood (brain) in legendary writings.

That is, this Supreme God created Sheshnag in the form of God named Vishwaroop Anant, who is holding this whole earth and all the ghosts along with the mountains.
It is notable that Sheshnag with thousand hoods is the king of all snakes. The only worshippers of God are those who bring joy by becoming His ashes, and they frequently take on His forms and engage in His pastimes with God. In the 10th chapter of Shrimadbhagwadgita, in the 29th verse, Lord Krishna has said – Anantashchasmi Nagaanam’ means I am Sheshnag among the snakes.
The entire ritual of foundation worship is based on the psychological belief that just like Sheshnag is holding the whole earth on its hood, in the same way the foundation of this building of mine should also be firmly established on the hood of the consecrated silver snake.
Sheshnag resides in Kshirsagar, therefore Sheshnag is invoked by pouring milk, curd, ghee in the pot of worship, invoking mantras, so that he can bear the burden of protecting the building by being present. Flowers and milk are offered in worship by putting a coin in the form of Lakshmi in the Vishnu-like Kalash, which is very dear to snakes. Snake is the ornament of Lord Shiva. Lakshmana and Balarama are considered Sheshavatars. This practice continues with this belief.
घर की नींव में क्यों गाड़े जाते हैं सांप और कलश?
श्रीमद्भागवत महापुराण के पांचवें स्कंध में लिखा है कि धरती के नीचे पाताल लोक है और इसके स्वामी शेषनाग हैं। अटल दस हजार योजन भूमि के नीचे, विट्ठल दस हजार योजन नीचे अटल, सातल दस हजार योजन नीचे, इसी क्रम में सारे लोक स्थित हैं। अतल, वितल, सातल, तलातल, महातल, रसताल, पाताल, ये सात लोक पाताल स्वर्ग कहलाते हैं। इनमें भी काम, भोग, ऐश्वर्य, आनंद, प्रतिष्ठा विद्यमान है। दैत्य, दैत्य, सर्प सब वहाँ सुख भोगते हुए रहते हैं। इन सब नरकों में अनेक पुरियाँ प्रकाशित रहती हैं।

इनमें देवलोक की शोभा से अधिक उद्यान और उद्यान हैं। इन पातालों में सूर्य आदि ग्रहों की अनुपस्थिति के कारण दिन और रात का विभाजन नहीं होता। इस कारण मृत्यु का भय नहीं रहता। यहां बड़े-बड़े नागों के मस्तक की माला अंधकार को दूर भगाती है। पाताल में नाग लोक के पति वासुकी
आदि सांप रहते हैं। श्रीशुकदेव के अनुसार शेषजी पाताल से तीस हजार योजन दूर विराजमान हैं। शेषजी के सिर पर पृथ्वी रख दी जाती है। शेष प्रलयकाल में जब वह संसार का नाश करने की इच्छा करता है तो क्रोध से टेढ़ी भौंहों के बीच में तीन नेत्रों से 11 रुद्र त्रिशूल लेकर प्रकट होता है। पौराणिक ग्रंथों में शेषनाग के फण (मस्तिष्क) पर पृथ्वी के टिके रहने का उल्लेख मिलता है।
शेष चाकल्पयद्देवमनन्तं विश्वरूपिणम् ।
यो धारयति भूतानि धरां चेमां सपर्वताम् ॥
–महाभारत/भीष्मपर्व 67/13
अर्थात् इस परमेश्वर ने विश्वरूप अनंत नाम के भगवान के रूप में शेषनाग की रचना की, जो इस पूरी पृथ्वी और पहाड़ों सहित सभी भूतों को धारण किए हुए है।
उल्लेखनीय है कि हजार फन वाले शेषनाग सभी नागों के राजा हैं। जो भगवान की राख बनकर सुख देते हैं, वे उनके अनन्य भक्त हैं और कई बार भगवान के साथ अवतार लेते हैं और उनकी लीलाओं में भाग लेते हैं। श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता के 10वें अध्याय के 29वें श्लोक में भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा है- अनंतश्चास्मि नागणम्’ अर्थात मैं नागों में शेषनाग हूं।

नींव पूजन का पूरा विधान इस मनोवैज्ञानिक मान्यता पर आधारित है कि जैसे शेषनाग पूरी पृथ्वी को अपने फन पर धारण किए हुए हैं, उसी प्रकार मेरे इस भवन की नींव भी चांदी के चांदी के सर्प के फण पर मजबूती से स्थापित होनी चाहिए। क्षीरसागर में शेषनाग का वास होता है, इसलिए पूजा के पात्र में दूध, दही, घी डालकर, मंत्रों का जाप करके शेषनाग का आह्वान किया जाता है, ताकि वे उपस्थित होकर भवन की रक्षा का भार उठा सकें।
नागों को अत्यंत प्रिय विष्णु रूपी कलश में लक्ष्मी रूपी सिक्का डालकर पूजा में फूल और दूध चढ़ाया जाता है। नाग भगवान शिव का आभूषण है। लक्ष्मण और बलराम को शेषावतार माना जाता है। इसी विश्वास के साथ यह प्रथा जारी है।
