How Did Rama Break the Bow and Ravana Who Lifted Mount Kailash Couldn’t Lift The Bow?
Such was the bow: Lord Shiva‘s bow was very powerful and miraculous. The bow that Shiva had made, clouds used to burst and mountains used to move. It appeared as though there had been an earthquake. This bow was very powerful. All the three cities of Tripurasura were destroyed with one of his arrows. The name of this bow was Pinaka. After the end of the period of gods and goddesses, this bow was handed over to Devraj Indra.
The gods gave it to Devraj, the ancestor of King Janak. Nimi’s eldest son Devraj was among the ancestors of King Janak. Shiv Dhanush was secure since he was descended from King Janak. No one had the ability to lift this giant bow of his, but Lord Rama lifted it and climbed its string and broke it in one stroke.
In Shri Ramcharitmanas there is a chaupai:-
“Uthahu Ram Bhanjahu Bhavachapa, Maytahu Taat Janakparitapa”
Meaning- Guru Vishwamitra, seeing Janakji very upset and disappointed, tells Shri Ram ji that O son Shriram, get up and break this bow in the form of “Bhav Sagar” and take away the pain of Janak ji.
There is a word in this chaupai ‘Bhav Chapa’ which means that to lift this bow, it was not power but love and nirankar that was required. It was an elusive and divine bow. Divine qualities were needed to lift it. No arrogant person could lift him.
Ravana was an arrogant man. He could lift Mount Kailash but not the bow. He could not even move the bow. The forest had gone to Shiv Dhanush with the pride of an arrogant and powerful person. The more Ravana used to apply power to that bow, that bow used to become heavier. There, the might and haughtiness of the monarchs led to their downfall.
As it was Lord Shri Ram’s time, he realized it wasn’t just any bow, but the bow of Lord Shiva. For this reason, he initially bowed to Shiv Dhanush. He then walked around the bow and gave him his whole attention. As Lord Shriram raised the bow with love and climbed its string, the bow’s weight magically vanished in front of his humility and purity, and as soon as he bowed it, the bow spontaneously broke.
It is said that just as Sita used to lift the bow without exerting any force by meditating on Lord Shiva, in the same way Shri ram also tried to lift the bow and succeeded.

रावण ने कैलाश पर्वत उठाया, फिर धनुष क्यों नहीं उठा पाया और श्री राम ने धनुष कैसे तोड़ा?
ऐसा था धनुष भगवान शिव का धनुष बहुत ही शक्तिशाली और चमत्कारी था। शिव ने जो धनुष बनाया था, उससे बादल फटते थे और पर्वत हिलते थे। ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे भूकंप आ गया हो। यह धनुष बहुत ही शक्तिशाली था। उनके एक बाण से त्रिपुरासुर की तीनों नगरियां नष्ट हो गईं। इस धनुष का नाम पिनाक था। देवी-देवताओं का काल समाप्त होने पर यह धनुष देवराज इन्द्र को सौंप दिया गया।
देवताओं ने इसे राजा जनक के पूर्वज देवराज को दे दिया। राजा जनक के पूर्वजों में निमि के ज्येष्ठ पुत्र देवराज थे। राजा जनक के पास विरासत के रूप में शिव-धनुष सुरक्षित थे। उनके इस विशालकाय धनुष को उठाने की क्षमता किसी में नहीं थी, लेकिन भगवान राम ने उसे उठाकर उसकी डोर पर चढ़कर एक ही झटके में तोड़ दिया।
श्री रामचरितमानस में चौपाई है:-
“उठहु राम भंजहु भवचापा, मेटहु तात जनकपरितापाI”
अर्थ- गुरु विश्वामित्र जनकजी को अत्यंत व्याकुल और निराश देखकर श्री रामजी से कहते हैं कि हे पुत्र श्रीराम, उठो और “भव सागर” रूपी इस धनुष को तोड़ दो और जनक की पीड़ा हर लो।

इस चौपाई में एक शब्द है ‘भव चाप’ जिसका अर्थ है कि इस धनुष को उठाने के लिए शक्ति नहीं बल्कि प्रेम और निरंकार की आवश्यकता थी। यह एक मायावी और दिव्य धनुष था। इसे उठाने के लिए दैवी गुणों की आवश्यकता थी। कोई भी अहंकारी उसे उठा नहीं सकता था।
रावण एक अहंकारी व्यक्ति था। वह कैलाश पर्वत उठा सकता था लेकिन धनुष नहीं। वह धनुष को हिला भी नहीं सकता था। वन एक अहंकारी और शक्तिशाली व्यक्ति के अभिमान से धनुष के पास चला गया था। रावण उस धनुष पर जितनी ही शक्ति लगाता वह धनुष भारी हो जाता था। वहाँ सभी राजा अपने बल और अहंकार से पराजित हो गए।
जब प्रभु श्रीराम की बारी आई तो वे समझ गए कि यह कोई साधारण धनुष नहीं बल्कि भगवान शिव का धनुष है। इसलिए सबसे पहले उन्होंने धनुष को प्रणाम किया। फिर उन्होंने धनुष की परिक्रमा की और उन्हें पूरा सम्मान दिया। प्रभु श्रीराम की विनम्रता और पवित्रता के आगे धनुष का भारीपन स्वत: ही गायब हो गया और उन्होंने उस धनुष को प्रेमपूर्वक उठाकर उसकी डोरी पर चढ़ा दिया और जैसे ही उन्होंने उसे झुकाया धनुष अपने आप टूट गया।
कहा जाता है कि जिस प्रकार सीता भगवान शिव का ध्यान करके बिना किसी बल के धनुष को उठा लेती थीं, उसी प्रकार श्रीराम ने भी धनुष को उठाने का प्रयास किया और सफल हुए।
